DEATH THEORIES

Terror management theory propose that humans manage the fear of their own death by developing cultural worldviews, such as beliefs in religion or science, which give meaning, purpose, and value to their lives and after immortality. This theory is based on the idea that human have an innate drive (Solomon at 1991). This needs to preserve one’s self arises from the mortal nature of human life.

The regret theory suggests that, distress is suffered at the time of death; however, feeling is quickly withdrawn, and the feeling of numbness and disbelief follow for some time. Many phases of grieving have been documented by researchers. These are passing episodes of separation distress as the bereaved person continues in normal functions routine tasks. Many theories have been put forward to account for death and dying including the Kubler- Rose model 1 theory of evolution. Among others.

The death instinct theory, according to Sigmund Freud is the human tendency to destructive, risky or otherwise negative behavior. The death instinct may seem like a strange concept to most people, and Freud himself was initially resistant to the idea. Although he found it a counterintuitive concept at first, Freud found that the death drive accurately describes the motivation behind certain risk – taking and harmful behaviors directed towards oneself of outward towards others. The death drive, or death instinct, brings about our eventual demise.

MANAGEMENT THEORY AND DEATH ACCEPTANCE

Management theory and death acceptance suggest that, death is the only certainty in life. All living organism die, these is no exception. However, human being alone is burdened with the cognitive capacity to be aware of their own inevitable immortality and to fear what may come after wards. Furthermore, their capacity to reflect on the meaning of life and death create additional existential anxiety.

There is a tacit understanding that sooner or later, we all have to come to terms with our own mortality. As surely as night follows day so death awaits us all. The certainly and inevitability of death make its presence fest in every arena of human existence. There is no escape from it shadow, no refuge from its power. How we react to the prospect of personal death would have impact on how we live.

Death Anxiety: Base on psychological theory, worries about dying or losing a loved one are a normal part of life, but if your thoughts about death (or dying) are extremely distressing, time – consuming, or stop you from doing important things, you might be experiencing death anxiety. Death anxiety can lead to difficulties with your mental health and can affect how you function in your daily life. It can also play a role in other problems including anxiety disorders (such as health anxiety or obsessive-compulsive disorder) depression, and eating disorders. The good news is that cognitive behavioral therapy is an effective treatment for death anxiety.
